History

Milestones

  • In the Fall of 2006 and continuing into early 2007, discussions of a Memorial Scholarship began with Monica's friends, classmates, and former teachers along with family members.
  • Articles of Incorporation, By-Laws, and all applicable paperwork was filed with the Secretary of State April 27, 2007.
  • The legal team of Brian Settles and Kevin Hoskins diligently went to work completing and preparing the Form 1023 application to gain approval for 501 (c) (3) status. The application was submitted August 30, 2007, with approval from the IRS being made September 25, 2007.
  • Our first scholarship award was made personally by the Combs Family in May, 2007, to Taylor Whitaker at WCHS Honors Program. Taylor is attending Midway College majoring in Nursing.
  • In our first year of operation, we raised approximately $6,000 in private individual donations.
  • Our first major fundraising event was held April 18th, 2008, and was chaired by Kevin Hoskins. The event consisted of a Dinner, and Silent and Live Auctions. Approximately 300 people attended the first event and it was a huge success.
  • The second award was given to Travis Swan in May, 2008, at WCHS Honors Night. Travis is currently attending Murray State University, majoring in Physical Engineering.
  • The second event was chaired and organized by Billy Hoskins and consisted of a Golf Scramble, Reception and Silent Auction held April, 24, 2008, at the Marriott at Griffin Gate. Approximately 200 people attended.
  • The third award was given to Tina Kirk in May, 2009, at WCHS Honors Night. Tina is currently attending Kentucky Wesleyan College.
  • The success of these events have enabled the Scholarship award to be increased to $5,000.
